Iva Dawn – Studio Update!
WHITNEY MOWER along with her guitarist LUCAS GORHAM left Houston and flew out to Los Angeles to record her debut batch of songs last week. She is recording with producer TOM BILLER (Warpaint, 30 Seconds to Mars) at his studio in the Silverlake area.
In just the first week, they’ve already started laying down the bones for the six (6) song debut EP, which will be released under the alias IVA DAWN.
The tracks are sounding AMAZING — some song titles include “Officer,” “Laugh Until I Cry” and “The Only One.”
The group was joined by drummer MATT CHAMBERLAIN, who was able to add his exceptional percussion work on five of the songs. Nicknamed “the human loop” by Tori Amos, Matt was the drummer for Edie Brickell and New Bohemians and has performed drums-percussion work on hundreds of studio albums for artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Nickel Creek, Brandi Carlile, Sarah McLachlan, Eric Clapton, Dido, David Bowie and The Wallflowers. He’s currently on tour with Soundgarden – check out Matt’s website and credits.

KACEY MUSGRAVES’ acoustic version of “Apologize” from Triple Pop has charted in BILLBOARD at #23 on the Hot Singles Sales chart for week of February 15, 2014.
The song charted next to Adele’s “Skyfall” and Chvrches “Recover” – one of my favorite songs.
“Apologize” is available on Triple Pop’s exclusive two (2) song digital digital EP “Apologize / See You Again” on the iTunes Store, Amazon MP3 and dozens of other digital music stores.
This is our label’s FIRST Billboard chart entry. It’s wonderful news for an indie.

Kacey Musgraves is CMA’s Best New Artist of 2013
Congratulations to KACEY MUSGRAVES for winning the NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD from the COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS!
Kacey won acclaim for her album Same Trailer Different Park. It’s an impressive achievement, especially for a newcomer.
ROLLING STONE said Kacey’s award was a “victory for country music” and it sets new marks in progressive values in the genre.
Same Trailer Different Park has been cited as of the Top Albums of the Year by Rolling Stone, Spin and Entertainment Weekly.
But we’ve known about Kacey for a long time. In 2008, Kacey lived in Austin for awhile, which is where we discovered her. I immediately knew she had the talent; she was a diamond in the rough.
I remember hearing her voice and being mesmerized. It was wonderful. She had great talent but needed better songs to sing, I remember thinking.
I pitched her my idea to record a couple cover songs together to see how we worked together. If it all worked out, I told her it was my intention to develop and produce her original songs afterwards. That was my plan, at least.
Recording with new talent is always risky – there are personality and timing issues and it takes money to rent good recording studios. You never know what’s going to happen. As a producer, I was Kacey’s first “super fan” willing to invest not knowing where she would end up next.
I pitched her several song ideas. She chose “See You Again” (Miley Cyrus) and “Apologize” (One Republic). We recorded on March 27, 2008, at Brain Machine Recording Studios with engineer Randy Avenell.
During the recording session, Kacey was professional and focused. She wanted the songs to be ‘just right’ and we spent a full evening working on the recordings.
I remember Kacey instructing the engineer, Randy, exactly how to mix her voice and adjust the levels, with acute precision. Kacey gave both songs an unique personality and she made them her own.
A few days later, she invited me out to see her perform at Momos above Katz’s Deli. I remember it was just her grandma and me in the audience, she was a great live performer, but nobody knew this girl. Heck, she had just gotten out of high school a couple years earlier.
Kacey invited me out to lunch a few weeks later – she likes Ethiopan food! For only being 21, Kacey struck me as being very wise beyond her years. We talked about recording original songs together in the future. As I recall, I suggested she move to Nashville and work with other songwriters to develop her craft.
I remember her telling me she was going to hit the road for awhile, play with some different musicians, and take it from there.
We promised to keep in touch. Kacey was restless. She wasn’t going to be stopped. We lost touch over the years.
Kacey ended up in Nashville, wrote some hit songs, got a record deal with a major label and there you have it.
The rest is history – it’s one in a million.
You can download both songs “See You Again” and “Apologize” from Kacey Musgraves on iTunes exclusively from my record label, Triple Pop.
Taylor Swift & Kacey Musgraves top nominees for CMA 2013 Awards
Along with Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves is the top nominee for the Country Music Association Awards in 2013.
The 25-year-old Texas-born singer-songwriter takes on divisive topics on her critically acclaimed album “Same Trailer Different Park” not often heard on country radio, yet she still managed to generate hits because of her smart songwriting.
Kacey is nominated for six awards including Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and as a songwriter on her own hit “Merry Go `Round” and Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart.”
Kacey will be performing live at the CMA Awards on November 6th.
Austin City Limits also just announced Kacey will be performing a live TV episode taping on November 25th.
Triple Pop’s exclusive two (2) song digital digital EP from Kacey Musgraves is available online at the iTunes Store.
Dee Dee Ramones’ Sid Vicious Painting
Dee Dee Ramone was also a prolific painter, often collaborating with artist Paul Kostabi.
Here is a never before seen image of Dee Dee’s only painting of Sid Vicious, the bass player for The Sex Pistols.
This painting has only been seen by a handful of people since Dee Dee painted it for me back in 2000, so consider yourself lucky. It’s now hanging in my office.
Dee Dee sure had some great stories about Mr. Vicious, whose life story was dramatized by Alex Cox in the feature film, Sid and Nancy (1986).
For some reason, in the mid-eighties, the exploits of The Sex Pistols, along with Sid Vicious, were popular stories among the punk rock kids.
So when I got to work with Dee Dee, I asked him about meeting Sid and Nancy one night at dinner.
Dee Dee sat down and custom painted this work for me the next morning.
Dee Dee’s last album of recordings, “Greatest and Latest” (2000), originally produced for the Conspiracy Music label, has since became part of Triple Pop.
Kris Farrow’s version of The Office TV theme featured in actual NBC Season Finale May 16th!
The producers of NBC’s show, The Office, are going to use Kris Farrow’s acoustic guitar version of the classic Office theme song in the primetime season retrospective finale of the show, which airs tomorrow, Thursday, May 16th 8pm EST, 7pm CST.
This is the final episode of the show (which we’ve all loved over the years) and we are sorry to see such a great show end.
We’re not sure exactly at what spot in the episode they’re are using the recording – it’s all top secret and stuff being the last episode. Our guess it’s going to be used in special montage segment. Just listen for Kris’ unmistakable guitar playing!
We are thankful to NBC for licensing Kris’ amazing acoustic guitar version of the song, which is available on Acoustic Guitar Karaoke, Vol. 24 (Movie & TV Themes) on the iTunes Store.
